Enrique Borrego, DVM – Veterinarian in Port St. Lucie, Florida
Dr. Borrego is a true animal lover and has cared for various pets throughout his life, ranging from chickens and goats to cats and dogs. He started Animal General Hospital for the purpose of improving the available pet care in Port Saint Lucie.
With over 30 years of experience in veterinary science, Dr. Borrego has dreamed of a future in veterinary medicine since the early age of five years old. This determination to help animals began after his pet bunny became ill and passed away. Dr. Borrego cared for his bunny in the best way that a five year could, under the direction of a veterinarian. Feeling helpless, he vowed to educate himself in veterinary medicine and dedicate the rest of his life to saving pets.
Dr. Borrego was born in Mexico, and completed his first veterinary degree at Universidad Autonoma De Zacatecas, Mexico. He then moved to Lubbock, Texas where he worked as a Veterinary Technician for 2 years, performing spay and neuters for the local Humane Society. In 1986, Doctor Borrego received his degree in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri.
After receiving his certification of DVM, Dr. Borrego worked for Canal Animal Hospital in Lake Worth, Florida, (1986 – 1988). In an effort to expand his experience, he transferred to an emergency clinic, Acacia Animal Clinic (1988-1990).
In 1990, Dr. Borrego moved to the Port Saint Lucie community and opened his own practice on Port Saint Lucie Blvd. He became a well known local resource for veterinary information in this community for organizations such as Animal Control, the Port Saint Lucie Library System, and the humane society.
In 2000, construction began on the beautiful new building that currently houses Dr. Borrego’s practice. This new building allows Dr. Borrego to provide even better health care, with a larger area for the patients and new, state of the art equipmentcDr. Borrego’s greatest pride is his family. Dr. Borrego has been married to his wife, Shannon, since 1979. Of course, she is an animal lover as well, and has been helping the pets in this community for many years. Shannon was a volunteer at the Treasure Coast humane society for a number of years and has served on their shelter committee. She is currently on the board of directors of Hobe Sound Animal Protection League. Dr. Enrique Borrego serves on the advisory board of HSAPL and often provides free services and medical care for the cats under their care.
His daughter, Natalie, also embraces the family’s desire to help animals. She graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor of science degree in Wildlife Management. She is currently pursuing her doctorate at the University of Miami in wildlife biology. Her current thesis work examines the behavior of lions in their prides.
When Dr. Borrego is not mending wounds or performing surgeries, he enjoys spending his free time playing a bit of golf or working on the computer. He is also an avid reader of science fiction and classical literature. However, currently his favorite hobby is “HALO”, a video game for the Xbox. Dr. Borrego claims that his obsession with Halo is merely to improve his hand eye coordination for surgery. However, we think it's mostly for fun!
