NEW PUPPY INFORMATION

  • Pups should be given a thorough physical examination by a veterinarian! A thorough physical examination by a veterinarian should be given within 48 hours of purchase.

  • Vaccination series should be started at 7 - 8 weeks of age.

  • A stool specimen will be examined today under the microscope to determine which internal parasites (worms") your puppy may have! The test also checks for Protozoan infections that may be picked up by young, curious pups.

  • Your pup will be wormed today for whatever internal parasites are present! You may see Ascarids ("roundworms") pass in the stools following deworming.

  • Puppies are NOT immune to Distemper and Parvovirus until at least 2 weeks after the last injection in the puppy series! The pup may get sick with these diseases anytime before that time. It is very important that your pup be isolated from other dogs as much as possible until that time. Do NOT take the puppy out and associate with other dogs any more than is necessary until we have finished the immunization series. Other dogs may be carriers of diseases contagious to your dog, although they do not appear sick themselves.

  • After exposure to a disease, it takes time for the pup to show clinical signs of illness! Therefore, it is impossible to be sure that your puppy is healthy and free of contagious disease for at least two weeks after you obtain the pup.

  • Notify the clinic if your new pup should develop diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of appetite that lasts longer than 12 hours! The pup will be sore from today's vaccination, but should be back to normal" within 24 hours. Do NOT give aspirin or Tylenol to the pup. One Tylenol can kill your pup.

  • Environment:
    (a) Protect from temperature variations. Remember its 8-10 degrees cooler on the floor in your house than up at your eye level because heat rises.
    (b) Thoroughly dry your puppy after each bath to prevent chilling. (Blow Dry)
    (c) Airline Shipping Crates make good beds and greatly aid in housebreaking. Keep the pup confined in the crate at all times when it is not directly under your supervision.

  • Nutrition:
    (a) Feed Premium dry dog food moistened with warm water. A small amount of canned food may be added for flavor, but really is not necessary. Premium food is much more concentrated than other foods and definitely better for the health and growth of your puppy.
    (b) Feed 4-6 times daily all it can eat in 15 minutes. Do NOT leave food out continuously as this makes housebreaking much harder!
    (c) Feed NO table scraps they cause nutritional imbalances and diarrhea!
    (d) Feed NO milk unless it is cut 1/2 with water and mixed in the food. (It is not recommended to give any milk at all.)

  • Return in 3 to 4 weeks for the next immunization!
Do not hesitate to call us regarding any questions you might have about your pup's health or habits.
It is very important to catch problems early in young animals to avoid major complications.
