Diagnostic Services
Regular examinations help us evaluate your pet’s overall health and identify potential problems early. Services include physical examinations, puppy and kitten care, senior-pet wellness, individualized vaccinations, parasite prevention, nutritional guidance, behavioral consultations, and microchipping.
Our diagnostic capabilities include in-house laboratory testing, complete blood counts, chemistry profiles, urinalysis, fecal testing, and additional specialized testing for selected medical conditions. We also provide digital radiography, ultrasound, electrocardiography, cytology, biopsies, and laboratory pathology.
Surgery & Anesthesia
Dental Care
We perform spay and neuter procedures, soft-tissue surgery, mass removal, abdominal and bladder surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, wound repair, and selected ophthalmic procedures. Preanesthetic bloodwork and electrocardiography are required for elective procedures. Each patient receives an individualized anesthetic and pain-management plan with appropriate monitoring and intravenous fluids.
Our dental services include complete oral examinations, professional cleaning and polishing, treatment of periodontal disease, necessary extractions, evaluation of broken or infected teeth, oral mass evaluation and biopsy, and individualized home dental-care recommendations.
Internal Medicine
Hospitalization & Supportive Care
We diagnose and manage gastrointestinal, kidney, urinary, liver, endocrine, cardiac, respiratory, dermatologic, infectious, neurologic, arthritic, and age-related conditions. Treatment is based on each patient’s diagnostic findings, comfort, and quality of life.
Hospitalized patients may receive intravenous fluids, injectable medications, pain management, nutritional support, oxygen support, wound care, medical monitoring, and postoperative observation during regular hospital hours.
Laser Therapy
Noninvasive treatment for pain, inflammation, and healing.
Animal General Hospital offers MLS® laser therapy, a form of photobiomodulation that uses specific wavelengths of light to support the body’s natural healing response. Treatment is painless, requires no incision, and usually requires no sedation.

At Animal General Hospital, our veterinarian in Port St. Lucie uses a handheld applicator to deliver laser energy to the affected area. Most pets remain comfortable and relaxed throughout the procedure. Treatment time, frequency, and the number of sessions depend on the condition being treated and your pet’s individual response. Laser therapy is generally used alongside—not instead of—appropriate examination, medication, diagnostic testing, surgery, or rehabilitation. Dr. Borrego will determine whether laser therapy is appropriate for your pet.
Telemedicine
Florida law permits licensed veterinarians to provide consultations using telemedicine. Animal General Hospital offers telemedicine only for established patients that have been examined in person by one of our veterinarians within the previous 12 months. Dr. Borrego will determine whether telemedicine is appropriate for your pet’s condition. An in-person examination may be required whenever necessary to provide proper medical care.
Telemedicine is not appropriate for emergencies. For urgent concerns during regular business hours, please call Animal General Hospital at 772-344-8835. If your pet has difficulty breathing, collapses, has uncontrolled bleeding, experiences seizures, or requires immediate care—especially outside our business hours—contact an emergency veterinary hospital immediately.

Enrique Borrego, DVM
Veterinarian & Owner
Dr. Borrego has cared for pets and their families in Port St. Lucie since opening Animal General Hospital in 1990. With four decades of veterinary experience in Florida, he brings extensive clinical knowledge, personal attention, and a practical approach to every patient’s care.
Originally trained in veterinary medicine in Mexico, Dr. Borrego continued his education at the University of Missouri (Mizzou), where he completed all clinical blocks comprising the final two years of the veterinary curriculum as part of the pathway to obtaining his Florida veterinary license in 1986. He is fluent in English and Spanish, helping families discuss their pets’ health comfortably and understand their treatment options.
His work encompasses preventive care, internal medicine, diagnostics, surgery, dentistry, and the ongoing management of chronic illness. He values continuity of care—getting to know each pet over time and understanding the family behind them. His approach emphasizes thorough examinations, clear explanations, and treatment recommendations tailored to the patient’s needs.
Dr. Borrego remains an active learner, following veterinary research and advances in medicine through the Veterinary Information Network and other professional resources. After decades in practice, his curiosity and commitment to thoughtful, evidence-based care continue to guide his work.
Outside the hospital, he enjoys time with his wife, Shannon, their daughter, and their grandson. His lifelong interest in animals, science, and the natural world extends well beyond veterinary practice.
For Dr. Borrego, Animal General Hospital represents a lasting relationship with the community and generations of pets he has helped care for.
Melanie
Head Veterinary Technician
With more than 10 years of experience in veterinary medicine, Melanie serves as Animal General Hospital’s Head Veterinary Technician. She has built her career around what she loves most—caring for animals and helping them feel their best. Her passion for veterinary medicine started early through Westwood High School’s veterinary program. Since then, she has worked in both Florida and Colorado, where she lived for several years.
Melanie has a special interest in surgery and dentistry and enjoys making a difference in her patients’ lives. Her love for animals continues beyond the clinic—she is a devoted cat lover and is always happy to give a furry friend a little extra attention.
Outside work, Melanie enjoys spending time with friends, visiting the beach, being out on the water, and, most importantly, making memories with her nieces and nephew. She brings experience, compassion, and a love for animals to everything she does.
Summer
Veterinary Technician
With over 10 years of experience in veterinary medicine, Summer serves as a Veterinary Technician at Animal General Hospital. She has built her career around her love for animals and the people who care for them. Her experience includes general practice, anesthesia, and leadership, and she enjoys the variety that comes with working in veterinary medicine.
Her love for animals goes far beyond the clinic. Summer has a soft spot for all things furry, creepy, crawly, and scaly, with a particular love for tarantulas and reptiles. At home, her animal companions include her dog, Kit; her cat, Sky; and her tarantula, Baz (Aphonopelma seemanni).
Outside work, Summer enjoys exploring new food spots, cooking, spending time with the people she loves, and finding something fun to do. She brings years of experience, a passion for animals, and plenty of enthusiasm for the weird and wonderful creatures of the world.
Tiffany
Receptionist
Born and raised in Florida, Tiffany serves as the Receptionist at Animal General Hospital. With more than six years of experience in the veterinary field, she enjoys helping care for animals and supporting the people who love them.
Family is at the center of Tiffany’s life. She is a proud mother of two and has shared 11 years with her significant other. Their home is also filled with 14 animals, making family life even more interesting.
Tiffany describes herself as compassionate and devoted. Whether spending time with her children, her significant other, or her many pets, she values the relationships that make her life meaningful. Her love for animals and their families carries into her work at the hospital.
Margarita
Hospital Housekeeping Specialist
Originally from the Dominican Republic, Margarita Campusano has been part of Animal General Hospital for six years. As our Hospital Housekeeping Specialist, she helps keep the hospital spotless, maintaining a clean, welcoming environment for patients, clients, and staff.
A nurse by profession, Margarita previously worked for 21 years at a rehabilitation center in Miami. She brings that extensive experience in a healthcare setting to her work at the hospital.
Margarita is married and has two children.
